Idly Upma

Idly upma was once a crazy invention by my mom. I remember how my mom used to prepare idly 3 to 4 times a week in 5 to 6 batches.

But often she end up with atleast 1 batch of left over idly. Me on the other hand hate having idly either be it for breakfast for snack.

So my mom came up with idly upma which i love to have it after school as a snack.

Ever since my childhood, every time we prepare idly batter, we prepare two different breakfast with it. One is regular idly and one is upma from idly.

Even if you are bored of eating regular idly, check this recipe and try it for breakfast of for evening time snack.

Chana dal : 1/2 tspn
Salt : as per your taste.

Dry Red chilly : 1 cut in to two halves.
Salt : as per your taste.
Lemon juice : 1 tspn

  • Add oil in to the pan. Once oil is heated up, add onions and saute.
  • Once onions become soft add jeera, mustard seeds, chana dal, urad dal, green chilies and turmeric.
    • Saute and let it cook for 3 minutes on medium flame.
    • Mean while, smash idly with your fingers. Smash it to a crumble texture.

    • Once green chilies turns medium pale, add dry red chilies, saute and let it cook for 2 mins.
    • Now add crumbled idly and saute until tampering is properly mixed with idly.
    • Add salt and saute again.

    • Close the lid and let it cook for 3 to 4 mins on medium flame.
    • Now add lemon juice and coriander leaves and toss.
    • Transfer it into a bowl and serve hot

    Note
Do not add lemon juice to upma if your idly batter is 1 day old. A day old idly batter release soar flavor.
